What is Masjid Jurana?

Masjid Jurana is a mosque at Al-Ji’ranah, a valley north-east of Makkah. Al-Ji’ranah lies outside the Haram, the sacred boundary around Masjid al-Haram.

Because it is outside the Haram, pilgrims who are already in Makkah can travel there to enter Ihram for another Umrah. Masjid Jurana is farther than Masjid Ayesha, but it is usually much quieter.

The mosque is modern, with wudu areas and washrooms. Many pilgrims choose it because of its direct link to the Umrah of the Prophet ﷺ.

The history of Ji’ranah: the Umrah after Hunayn

Al-Ji’ranah is linked to events in 8 AH (630 CE). After the conquest of Makkah, the Muslims fought the tribes of Hawazin at the Battle of Hunayn. The Qur’an mentions Hunayn in Surah at-Tawbah (9:25–26).

After Hunayn and the siege of Taif, the Prophet ﷺ camped at Al-Ji’ranah. The spoils of the battle had been gathered there, and he distributed them at this site.

From Al-Ji’ranah, the Prophet ﷺ entered Ihram and performed Umrah. The companion Muharrish al-Ka’bi (RA) reported that he left Al-Ji’ranah at night, performed his Umrah in Makkah, and was back at Al-Ji’ranah by morning. The narration is in Jami’ at-Tirmidhi and Sunan Abi Dawud.

Is Masjid Jurana a Miqat?

Masjid Jurana is a place to enter Ihram for people who are already inside Makkah. It is not one of the five main Mawaqit used by pilgrims arriving from outside.

Pilgrims flying in from abroad usually enter Ihram at, or before, their own Miqat on the way. Masjid Jurana, like Masjid Ayesha, is for residents of Makkah and for pilgrims staying there who want to perform another Umrah.

Some scholars mention Al-Ji’ranah as a preferred place to enter Ihram because the Prophet ﷺ did so himself. Others treat Al-Tan’eem and Al-Ji’ranah as equally valid. Please ask your scholar or group leader which applies to you. The Miqat guide explains every Miqat.

How far is Masjid Jurana from Masjid al-Haram?

Masjid Jurana is roughly 25 km from Masjid al-Haram by road. Sources give figures between about 24 and 29 km, depending on the route measured.

The drive usually takes 30 to 45 minutes each way. It can take longer after Isha, on Thursday and Friday nights, and during Ramadan, when traffic around the Haram is heaviest.

Public transport to Al-Ji’ranah is limited, so most pilgrims travel by car. A return trip with a driver who waits is the simplest way to go.
